On the afternoon of Thursday, November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered one of the best-known speeches in American history. The Gettysburg Address was presented at a dedication to the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four and a half months after the North’s armies defeated the Confederate forces at the Battle of Gettysburg. Next Monday is Memorial Day, which is a federal holiday for the purpose of remembering the brave men and women who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.
