Atlanta Police “Strike Team” Targets Smash-And-Grab Crew

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police have made six arrests in the last week connected to a smash-and-grab crew. Three of those arrests came early Thursday morning.

Atlanta Police Major Van Hobbs told 11Alive’s Duffie Dixon officers observed three males exit a black vehicle and leave a parking deck on Northside Drive at 2:45 a.m.

After investigating further, officers detained the males and discovered their vehicle, a 2015 Toyota Avalon, had been stolen. Inside the stolen vehicle were several items that may have been stolen from other vehicles.

All three males were charged with Theft By Receiving Stolen Auto, but Hobbs said additional charges are likely once they connect the three to a series of car break-ins.

Inside the same parking deck and on the same level officers located two vehicles with windows broken out.

Officers are investigating to determine whether these were broken into during yesterday’s incident or if these were new incidents.

Hobbs said Atlanta has seen an increase in thefts from cars over the last month. He said additional officers have been shifted to their undercover “strike team”. They’ve been staking out parking garages. They made four arrests earlier this week.

Hobbs said they’ve obtained a warrant for a seventh suspect they believe is a member of the the smash-and-grab crew.
